Storm Snacks

As the Nor’easter whips bare branches and rattles window panes, the day disappears into a blur of white. I reach into the box of storm snacks, and, not even tempted by chips, pick a pack of halvah. Each sweet sesame bite brings back the smells and tastes of Factor’s Deli, where they cut thick slices off a marble block. Or, in later years, Kensington Market, where it was shaped in rounds like a tiered wedding cake and bought in wedges. I ate it by the pound. Today I get my fix at Scoop ‘n Save, in small, individually packaged squares that give the illusion, I can stop after one or two. Smiling, E asks, How many is that? Grinning, I get up again, on my way to finishing the box. Through the window, the wind is still swirling flakes of snow like a scene in someone’s snow globe.
