Not For The Faint Of Heart

It’s Passover! Chag Sameach

Back in the day,
someone was always trying’
to have their way,
make us pay,
and even today
there’s no bouquet.
People try to silence
what we say,
how we pray:
criticize us
blame us
enslave us
kill us.
And each time we survive,
we mark the date,
enunciate,
set the record straight
and celebrate.
Didn’t hide
but defied
and rose with pride
to tell our story,
not an allegory,
an inventory,
of every category
of pain and pest,
plague and test.
To teach our kids
with droopy lids
about our bids
to keep our culture,
homeland, heritage.
How we crossed the sea,
were redeemed,
then set free,
secured our liberty:
no longer slaves at Pharaoh’s hour,
but servants to a higher power.
A mantle we carry,
a yoke we marry,
responsibility to honour,
and not to tarry.
A book we hold,
we grumble, we scold,
argue, debate,
stay up late,
question, learn,
to find new meaning
at every turn.
Within creation is our station
and frustration,
no vacation,
to live up to being
a holy nation.
Can’t let it down,
can’t give it a rest,
always trying’ to be
at our best.
In every moment lies a choice,
awareness held within our voice.
How we live in cold and heat,
is how we honour,
the One who’s in the driver’s seat,
who took us out,
to the other side,
who we we remember
on this, our ride.
And part of the deal
with royal seal
is not to wrong another,
love everyone as our brother,
for we were once,
an other.
