One bright and sunny day in May,
my belly was distended.
Go quickly to the ER room,
what E had recommended.
I went on down to hospital
to have them see my gut.
The surgeon said, What you need now,
a clean and practiced cut.
O there’s one thing mother’s have often said,
the suffering’s worth the fun.
For me the prize is to be alive,
and blessed to see the sun.
The nurses gathered round and round,
and cooed and ooed and smiled.
A gorgeous creature you’ve got there,
just like a real-life child.
My baby is my stoma dear,
and though it gives me strife,
it eliminates the painful days,
and grants a fuller life.
O there’s one thing mother’s have often said,
the suffering’s worth the fun.
For me the prize is to be alive,
and blessed to see the sun.
They showed me how to burp the babe,
and do a diaper change.
And what to do for rosy rash,
or when it’s making strange.
Sometimes it makes such awful sounds,
like whoosh, and swoosh, and fart.
Or smells that permeate the house,
don’t easily depart.
O there’s one thing mother’s have often said,
the suffering’s worth the fun.
For me the prize is to be alive,
and blessed to see the sun.
Its color is a deep deep red,
like the inside of the cheek.
The shade of hearty healthy skin,
just at its robust peak.
I was ready to hand out big cigars,
just like a proud proud dad.
Or maybe have a dram or two,
of whiskey, just a tad.
O there’s one thing mother’s have often said,
the suffering’s worth the fun.
For me the prize is to be alive,
and blessed to see the sun.
So now that I have been discharged,
and living life at home.
I take my stoma everywhere,
everywhere I roam.
Thanks to folks who’ve lent a hand,
it’s made the change quite smooth.
They’ve taught some tricks and how to fix,
to comfort and to sooth.
O there’s one thing mother’s have often said,
the suffering’s worth the fun.
For me the prize is to be alive,
and blessed to see the sun.
For me the prize is to be alive,
and blessed to see the sun.
Only you Larry, could succeed in bringing such a traumatic experience to a blend of pure gratitude and appreciation of life, mixed with such humour! I loved it!
