Woman in the Painting

Painting by Joel Green, Emanuelle, 2001.

Who are you,
young, blossoming woman?
Are you a memory,
a figment of the artist’s imagination,
or a model who sat for hours?
Your smile
reaches through the canvas’ edge,
radiating self-assurance,
not caring what others seem to think,
daring them to crack wise or disagree,
or to try to knock you off your spot.
All the while,
comfortable in your own skin,
embracing yourself, your body,
reaching out to greet the world.
And me, today,
just wanting for myself,
some of that confident, come-and-get-me attitude.
