We Stand In Solidarity

Artwork by Ayten Kranat

Today we gather to mourn your children,
understand your struggles and defeats,
your efforts to take back what was taken,
and right inequities within our streets.

Today we wrestle with the haunting question:
how could we inflict such wrong,
and carry forth a special duty,
to push out hate gone on so long.

Today our hands will work together,
to mend the fabric of our state,
and heal the torn and tattered edges,
a cloth where justice, shall permeate.

And we remember what our sages,
had left in books for us to know,
Our task is not to complete the project,
but neither are we free to let it go.

Today we hear the same Creator,
who sings to each a special song,
our peoples move to familiar music:
notes that join to make us strong.

Three thousand years before this,
Jews wandered on the shifting sand,
a people from across the river,
a people of the land.

We created sacred cities,
a culture we had sown:
art and law and language,
and ceremonies of our own.

We once had suffered slavery,
were pushed from place to place,
had our children taken,
were exiled from our space.

Today we walk where Moses walked
and live where God stretched out a hand,
we are the people of the book,
but also of the land.

A common history of hardship,
and preserving our identities,
has bound our groups together,
Jews stand in solidarity.

And we remember what our sages,
had left in books for us to know,
Ours task is not to complete the project,
but neither are we free to let it go.
