Two Weeks Ago

The arthritic bones
of the aged synagogue,
ache.
It groans,
having to face another day,
carrying on its hunched shoulders
the souls of generations past,
and the weight of the world today.
Facing toward Jerusalem,
blanketed by the cover of quiet,
I am absorbed in silent conversation,
and waiting,
for the small still voice’s soft reply.
Sounds of footsteps falling,
creaking up the stairs behind,
shockwaves shattering the dialogue.
Eyes flitting,
neck craning,
ears straining,
deciphering, discerning, distinguishing,
friend or foe.
Apprehension rising
from that lava pit of emotion,
overflowing the crater’s edge,
and breaking the balmy bubble
of safety and security.
Moments
I did not have two weeks ago.
Thoughts
I did not have two weeks ago.
Vigilance
I did not have two weeks ago.

  1. Wow-you have captured and expressed such powerful emotions. Well done. I was moved to tears and have shared with friends. Jane L. next door has begun to ‘follow’.
