Secrets of the Purse

What do guys call a pouch or a purse?
Is it a packsack, a bro bag, or even a murse?
Nothing that’s twirly or pearly will do,
but something you take when you’re having a brew.
Something you strap on your shoulder or back,
and head to the rink or car racing track.

The bag holds my wallet, my keys and my book,
my journal, my pens, whatever I took.
Eraser, some glasses and filled to the brim,
it now weighs a ton, but isn’t that why I go to the gym?

It’s far more complex, than it is clear,
more loaded with nuance, than carefree m’dear.
It’s far more refined, than it is rough,
more about taste, than it is tough.

As my ‘fashion consultant’ told me this way,
You don’t go like that, like that, into the day.
A bag calls to be matched with a belt and with shoes,
and not just any old outfit you choose.
An elegant leather must fit the attire,
don’t put it with something to sit ’round a campfire.

Of course I know, this narrows the zone,
since there’s only one outfit like that, that I own.
There’s only one pair of brown shoes that will match,
and only one belt that I can attach.

So if I am eyeing your lovely black bag,
not as a joke and not as a gag,
but as something quite handsome and mostly revered,
don’t be surprised if it has disappeared.

Another dilemma I find with the thing,
when I go out to eat, is it something I bring?
Is it put on my lap or hung on the chair,
how to hide it from thieves who just might be there?

And one other question that nags at my brain,
in what pocket did I put it or was it the main?
Was it under my wallet or beside that new book?
Or between the crease inside that same nook?

How do they know this, how did they learn?
What is the knowledge, I just can’t discern?
How do they remember it all any way?
Perhaps it’s a secret that women won’t say.

So call it a bag or call it a purse,
call it a sack or call it a murse.
It’s something I’ve grasped: I don’t have to hide.
I can be any man, and be it with pride.

  1. Loved this, Larry.

I think “Murse” is a great name for this bag!

Maybe it will be deemed the perfect bag designed specially for both males and females.

The “Murse” has the potential to be the most popular bag ever. Buy it early before they sell out completely!

  2. This one made me smile! I remember you telling us all about your new bag, and how liberating it was to finally have all you ‘man stuff’ in one place and not in your various pockets.
