Where did my laugh go this year that has passed?
Was it swallowed by news that had been broadcast?
Did it fly on the airwaves like a bird taking flight,
and go south in migration, out of mind, out of sight?
Did it go through the roof like the prices of food,
or shortages on shelves or the high price of crude.
Or like flotsam and jetsam got washed out to sea,
by the power of Fiona that changed homes to debris.
It could’ve gone dark like the lights in Ukraine,
or escaped with the refugees who fled on the planes.
Did it go up in smoke with the hijabs that were burned in Iran,
or get lost in the pages of the books that were banned?
Did it break with the glass in the Capital insurrection,
or go missing like documents in Trump’s predilection?
Did it fall into chaos like the convoy of truckers
who took Ottawa hostage— those blanks and those f*****s!
Did it die with the tweets of Mr. K. West,
as they morphed into hatred that he had expressed?
Was it lost in the shuffle by Elon R. Musk,
who took away safeguards like corn from the husk?
Maybe it went missing like luggage on some delayed plane,
that left passengers stranded from Toronto to Bahrain.
Or did it sink like the souls who fell with the flu,
who went hot and then cold, then sneezed loudly, achoo!
With all this sad news I must sound like Eeyore,
which now makes me seem like a bit of a bore.
But there hasn’t been much to laugh at this year,
nothing that tickles or is funny to cheer.
For a new year’s resolution, it may seem a bit strange,
but let’s work together to help the world change.
Perhaps we can listen, perhaps we can learn,
so my laugh, like the birds, will one day return.
How I pray we will listen and learn, be kinder to one another. We need to do better!
Thank you Cherlynn for your thoughts. I hope this finds you and your family well.

A wonderful word picture of the past year. As it is said, ‘this too shall pass’.
