Someone died today,
half a world away.
She was Ukrainian and Afghan,
Chinese and Israeli,
a Christian, a Hindu,
a Muslim and a Jew.
She sewed, owned a store,
tended fields and mined the ore,
lived in a house, a shack,
a high-rise, a tent out back.
She was young, she was old,
a child in heat and in cold,
had a partner at her side,
and a mother she tried to hide.
She was a civilian, a soldier,
rose early from her bed,
a volunteer, a mayor,
dug a trench to bury dead.
She was killed by rifle, rocket,
hunger and disease,
by hatred and aggression,
intolerance and decrees.
She is me, she is you,
every nation, every hue.
Everyday she lives, she dies,
she bears witness, she cries.
Half a world away,
someone died today.
Wow Larry, that gave me goosebumps. One of your more powerful poems. Insightful.
Agree with Sandra, kinda hit to what is happening today.
Very powerful
A reminder that we are all citizens of this beautiful world no matter where we live or what our ethnic background may be.
