Bereshit – In the Beginning

Pillars of Creation: NASA James Webb telescope

In one universe,
the world came into being by God’s words
spoken millennia ago.
Here, I feel the breath of animals
as Noah guides them to the ark,
wander with Abraham and Sarah,
hearing them hear the voice of God,
and see Jacob become Israel.
In another universe,
I hear the Big Bang,
witness the Neanderthals walk the earth,
and see the mushroom cloud that Einstein shaped.
I am fluent in two languages,
see both foreground and background in the artist’s masterpiece,
and hear different melodies in the music of creation.
It is neither either/or,
nor all or none:
each,
part of this long history
stretching from infinity to infinity,
from eternity to eternity.

  1. You have painted a word picture of the conundrum people of faith experience when trying to reconcile science to what we believe and know in our hearts to be true. As you say-this is not an either/or decision, but a togetherness for eternity.
