The Jewish Story

As you light your multi-colored candle lights
for eight short days and darkened nights,
tell the tale of the Jewish story
that starts with tragedy and ends with glory:
our people’s compliance and surrender,
embracing Greek culture and its splendor,
rebelling against an empire’s power,
and kindling the oil in our shining hour.
A nation captive, then unchained,
identity lost and then regained.

We live our lives against the current
and thrive each day on what we’ve learnt.
Don’t smooth the sharpened points and sides
of the star of David that protects and guides.
Celebrate our difference,
our history and good sense,
our contributions and success,
our relationship to God and faithfulness.

Let the beams of Jewish might
shine brightly in the coming night,
as we publicize the miracle by candle light.
