Whenever I have to leave,
I shall be sad, no longer to see your face,
and not to feel my heart heave,
at the sight of you.
I shall be sad not to run my toes through the sand,
feel the wind upon my face,
and walk the beaches hand in hand,
with you.
I shall miss the swell of pride at my children’s feats,
laughing at their jokes,
and knowing that inside each, a good heart beats
its way though life.
Whenever I have to go away,
I shall miss the gathering of friends,
see them smile and hear them laugh and say,
We love you, as they hold me snug.
I shall miss the smell of rain and morning dew,
hearing the leaves flutter in the brisk breeze,
seeing the brilliant fall hue,
and breathing deep the musty earth.
I shall miss sinking my hands into soft dough,
feel it yield,
and then, seeing it rise and grow
into loaves with crackling crusts.
I shall miss observing the daily drama
of human beings, cross with one another,
caught in conflict that ends in trauma,
and helping in some small way to ease their pain.
I shall be sad not to see God’s hand
touch the world each day,
feel the joy of seeing the sun’s rise across the land,
and the calm of star’s shine.
I shall miss the delight of learning something new,
discovering a book, a phrase, a word,
a flash of insight that shines a clue
onto a darkened world.
I shall miss the sound of ranting and railing at righting wrong,
reading the letters written, hearing the arguments made,
and seeing ground sometimes gained, headlong,
toward a more just and peaceful time.
I shall miss every one.
I shall miss every thing.
I shall miss it all.
Beautiful poem
Thanks again, Larry, for putting into words on the page ideas, thoughts, feelings and hopes that some of us recognize daily.
Many blessings
