When a head shake’s not enough to show
contempt for the political blow-by-blow,
will an eye roll or a sigh
that leaves you asking, why, why, why,
capture the exasperation that comes with yet another piece of news?
When you thought you’d heard it all
but find there’s more that casts a pall,
what gesture will suffice
to express it in a way that is concise,
yet a combination of disgust and disbelief?
Or is there something more discerning,
nuanced and affirming,
than the universal middle finger,
something that will linger
on and on and on?
Some gesture you can show the group
when you find that truth and common sense have flown the coop
and whose perch is nowhere in your sight.
Perhaps a curled lip or crinkled nose,
detecting something foul that has arose,
just before a howl
communicates catastrophe and consternation,
disapproval and dismay.
Or a shoulder shrug and hands raised to the sky
as you ask, you know who the reason why,
something to prevent you getting numbed into not reacting.
Something that won’t let your anger just evaporate
like the memorable meal that you last ate,
but will let it power the car of protest and indignation.
Better to shake a fist at the TV,
bare your teeth and disagree,
threaten to jump through the screen
and cause a free-for-all and ugly scene,
than make yourself invisible, and not register it all.
