Truly Canadian (Last Post Until September)

I have to say
that not until today
and after more than 50 years,
a few shed tears
and lots and lots of joy,
have I ever felt more Canadian.
Oh, I’ve sipped some Tim’s
and had my share of roll up rims,
bought a beaver tail or two
on which to munch and crunch and chew,
and even eaten yummy pieces of Nanaimo Bars.
I’ve learned to punctuate my sentences with ‘eh’,
inserted ‘sorry’ into my speech, hooray!
and brought out nice and kind
so I could learn to compromise.
I’ve dined on salmon and fiddleheads,
supped baked beans with molasses and brown breads,
and had my fill of Acadian meat pie.
And though I put a maple leaf upon my car,
I’ve never felt more Canadian by far
than when I brought a hockey helmet home.
And while I’ll likely never play,
I manage to teeter, totter, swing, and sway
myself around the rink and balance on the blades.
It will protect me from a fall,
and hopefully, I won’t have to crawl
to the boards to rise again another day.
And if I travel, tramp, and go
and anyone really wants to know
what country I am from,
I can proudly show them this:
a picture of my helmet, skates, and me in bliss,
for truly, I’m Canadian.
