Our Story

Happy Purim

Every culture has its cookie,
every cookie has a tale.
The Jewish treat is hamantaschen;
its story is how we prevailed.

In the ancient land of Persia,
lots were drawn to set a date.
Haman was the drama’s villain,
who tried to seal our people’s fate.

Esther was the story’s hero,
with courage she had undertook,
to turn the tables on our villain,
calling checkmate with a rook.

In hist’ry when a blow befell us,
we came up with something new,
reinventing our tradition,
and our nation only grew.

After Rome destroyed our temple,
we were exiled from our land,
then renewed the house of worship,
where God now touches human hands.

Diasporas spread around the world,
speaking many a different tongue.
We revived a sacred language,
to let a common song be sung.

When Hitler’s hatred swept through Europe,
no one else would take us in.
We reclaimed our ancient country,
and built a home for kith and kin.

After losing countless scholars
and our reading rate declined,
we established Jewish day schools,
where day and night are intertwined.

Every year we read the epic,
and celebrate with gifts of food.
Helping those who are still struggling,
for we were once ourselves eschewed.

Every year the cookie’s story,
reminds us of the things endured,
and the journey of our people,
who we are, what we’ve secured.

  1. Thank you, Larry.
Cookies come and cookies go, as stories of a past long told.
One can taste with every bite, the triumph we share with such delight.
