National Indigenous Persons Day: We Will Live On

Nations,
whose lifeblood
was poured out on the earth,
filling cracks and spaces,
forests and occupied places,
are on the rise again,
hacking out a place to stand,
reclaiming rights and land,
celebrating ceremony,
culture and asserting their identity.
In the steady strong beat of the drum,
the rhythmic chant of the people,
the enveloping energy of the dancer’s body,
the pride worn on the faces of the young,
and the glowing embers of the sacred fire,
I hear the song sung from a people’s soul:
We will not go quietly into the night.
We will not give up our fight.
We will not be invisible
and party to our own extinction.
We will live on.
