Like Normal

Don’t ask me why, I have no clue,
but right out of the brightest brilliant blue,
I started shaking everyone else’s hand.
Naked to the world
where germs still swirled,
exposed to whatever creature clings
to the smooth surfaces of our beings,
I grabbed another person’s hand.
And forgetting thoughts of rubber gloves,
wearing masks for those we love,
cleaning hands with disinfecting wipes,
and not touching fruit to tell which one is ripe,
I ventured out.
Now, gathering in social situations,
engaging with friends in casual conversations,
talking about outdoor heat and indoor fans,
future trips and travel plans,
drinking wine and sharing snacks,
hello hugs and goodbye smacks,
while smiles, like bubbles in champagne,
pop out everywhere, and in every person’s brain,
giddiness just to be alive.
All of us recognizing what we can’t foresee,
never knowing when the wine will suddenly,
go flat,
and everyone’s determination to not go slow, but to hasten,
and make the most of our duration.
