Inspired by My Clients: A Couples Counsellor Reflects on Love

Love
is the steel-strong bond
forged in the fires of time,
and tempered
by the ebb and flow
of connection and disconnection and reconnection,
as partners face
the beasts of everyday life.
It is shaped
by witnessing the seasons change
from hot sultry summers,
to the cool winters of old age,
realizing,
it is not the pristine purity of first snow
that holds them together,
nor the delicate beauty of early spring flowers,
but the tenacious grip of late fall frost
which doesn’t easily yield its hold on the earth,
that fiercely reaches for
and protects one another.
Love involves
making and remaking,
building and rebuilding
the architecture of a relationship,
having dreams of how you imagined your life to be,
dashed,
and then creating a new vision,
together.
Coming to understand
that moments of vulnerability
display the precious facets of our being,
and allow them to be polished by a partner’s acceptance.
And having gratitude,
that partners hold us
in their hearts and in their minds
and carry us through their days.
For love
does not go out into the world
wearing the newly purchased white wedding dress,
but dons the sometimes stained,
well-worn and often mended,
overalls of everyday life.
