In This Place

Today,
the world does not seem to be in a rush,
no one is in a hurry to go nowhere,
only a solitary car makes its way
down the darkened road to town.
Or maybe, it is us
who have fewer things planned,
allowing the day to unfold in its own way,
as multi-tasking has been left behind
in a forgotten file folder.
Time has taken a break
from its usual, steady stride,
preferring instead,
to sit on a rock, staring at the horizon.
There are fewer phone calls,
emails are left unanswered,
and the TV, sits silent.
In their stead,
white wine dinners on the balcony have appeared,
while down below,
beach goers return,
pool swimmers migrate back,
and walkers leave for evening strolls.
In this place,
there is nothing to respond to
but the beat of our own hearts,
a book that calls to be read,
the bird winging its way along the shore,
or a friend’s invitation for drinks and conversation.
