Children

Son

When you came to us
you were a bubbly babe in blankets,
held out by the loving arms
of your foster mom.
Others said
you were lucky,
but we knew,
we were the lucky ones.

When you came to us,
you had no stories
of grandparents,
favourite family foods,
or special celebrations.
We didn’t know
one day you would have
stories of your own
to tell around the table.

We didn’t know
your life would be
an uphill road
with twists and turns
and potholes,
and that eventually,
it would level out.

When you came to us,
your feet were small.
We didn’t know
one day,
we would look on with pride
as you filled
a pair of man-sized shoes.
When you came to us,
we didn’t know.

Daughter

Marveling
at your face,
mirroring the shape of my face:
same ears,
same cheeks,
same bones.
Another fully formed person
with facets of my personality,
yet fiercely your own.
Like birds of a feather
singing different songs.
A father’s pride,
beaming bright rays of sun
at who you have become,
and thanking God
for helping us find a way
back to each other.

We consider our son to be a “gift” ….a very precious gift. We are so grateful to have him.

  3. I am sure there is a ‘back story’ to this lovely expression of a father’s love and pride in his children. Well done.
