Under sunny spring skies
childhood chalk artists
with names like
Kelli, Tori, and Jake,
draw pastel pictures
on grey concrete squares.
Squatting silently,
little hands
use iridescent blues,
pale salmons
and bright yellows
to create works that lie
in the neighborhood gallery:
smiling sunflowers,
hopscotch squares,
stick-figure girls
holding hands from grass to grass,
and endless lines
marked by arrows
pointing the way home.
Masterpieces
that bring joy
to an old man’s heart,
and last
until the next downpour
washes the canvas clean.
