April is a heartbreak,
a temptress and a tease.
She will set your heart aflutter,
and raise your hopes with promises,
then dash them all with ease.
April is a month
of contrasts and contradictions,
of sunny ways and snow filled days.
Where wet slushy snows
sit beside sandy sidewalks,
and winter’s wonderland concedes
to coffee cups and candy wrappers
found among the weeds.
April is a month
whose warm tender touch
coaxes you
into short sleeves and sneakers,
then sharply shoves you back
into boots and coats.
Whose gentle words
bring mornings filled with cooing birds,
then muffles them with Northwest winds and heavy rain.
I for one,
refuse to yield to her alluring charms.
I toughen my skin
to her tender touch,
and harden my heart
to her siren song.
I regard her fair weather
as a mirage found in desert dune.
I refuse to put winter clothes away
or take snow tires off too soon,
but keep them near
as my insurance against her fickle moods.
Only when April is long gone,
and her reliable replacement
has settled into the neighborhood,
will I let myself believe
that Spring, is here to stay.
I lov e your words. You paint so vivid a picture that we all have lived. April truly the temptress and I for one would have it no other way – I love our seasons.
