Always There

At first,
I shut my eyes to your faces.
I closed my ears to your stories.
I hardened my heart to your families’ pain.
I did not even want to know your names.
Too much to absorb.
Too afraid the days would never be normal again.
Too terrified my tears would flood the streets and drown us all.
Now,
your faces hover like flakes of dust
riding rays of light in a darkened room,
fading in and out of sight,
always there.

  1. Putting a face and name to a story does make it more impactful. And then we are better able to absorb the details for later recall. Well stated.
