A Shrinking Spotlight

Like saucy squirrels
putting away their nuts,
gathering geese
practicing formations,
and pokey bears
searching out a place to hibernate,
we make ready for another Covid winter,
seeking cover from the coming storms:
saying goodbye to warm weather friends,
keeping clear of group activities,
and laying in a sure supply of masks.
Come spring,
will we find our way back
to friendships we’ve put aside,
retrieve activities we’ve avoided,
and come out of winter’s sleep
to rejoin our community?
Are our lives
now forever smaller?
Can we ration
fewer hugs,
live lives less diverse,
and thrive,
in a shrinking spotlight
of sunshine?
