The Late Arrival of Winter

Basking in the sunny days of summer
that stretch their fingers into fall,
warm weather wraps us in its soft embrace,
long after pumpkins are pitched,
leaves are raked,
past the time tires are changed,
and short sleeves are swapped for long.
Bikes that are supposed to be in hibernation,
are still seen travelling the trails,
and roses that might have drooped and dropped their petals,
stand straight in bloom.
Birds that by now have fled south,
perch on bare branches,
and people usually dozing in their dens,
are sitting on porches and backyard benches.
All of us pretending,
that all of this isn’t portending,
something worse,
than the late arrival of winter.

  1. I am enjoying every bit of basking in the sunny days of summer in November!

Hope we can continue basking in the New Year until we officially move into 2023.
